6 FASCINATING FACTS ON AROMATHERAPY…

The roots of aromatherapy can be traced back more than 3,500 years before the birth of Christ, to a time when the use of aromatics was first recorded in human history.

The use of essential oils for therapeutic, spiritual, hygienic and ritualistic purposes goes back to a number of ancient civilizations including the Chinese, Indians, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans who used them in cosmetics, perfumes, and drugs.

The history of aromatherapy is believed to have begun with the burning of fragrant woods, leaves, needles, and tree gums in ancient times. This practice probably arose from the discovery that some firewood, such as cypress and cedar, filled the air with scent when they burned. In fact, our modern word perfume is derived from the Latin per fumum, which means “through smoke.”

A French surgeon, Jean Valnet, pioneered the medicinal uses of essential oils, which he used as antiseptics in the treatment of wounded soldiers during World War

Madame Marguerite Maury (1895-1968) was an Austrian born biochemist who became interested in what was to become aromatherapy.  Her influential book, ‘Le Capital Jeunesse’ was released in France in 1961 but sadly did not initially receive the acclaim that it deserved. In 1964 it was released in Britain under the title of ‘The Secret of Life and Youth’ and has at last been recognised for the great work that it was.

Throughout the world, aroma became an integral part of healing and lay the foundation for our use of aromatherapy today.

The Hair & Beauty Lounge offers a full body Aromatherapy for £42 – booking is essential for this luxury treatment.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF MASSAGE…

With so many different types of massage to choose from, it makes it quite difficult to decide which one to try and which one you would benefit from the most.
Records dating back as far as 2,700BC show that ancient Eastern Chinese Cultures practised massage to heal a number of ailments. Egyptian tombs have also been discovered to have images of figures being massaged. It is also well known that Julius Caesar underwent daily massages to treat nerve pain.
Swedish Massage – this massage uses long smooth strokes, kneading, and circular movements in superficial layers of muscle using massage lotion or oil.
Aromatherapy Massage – this massage uses one or more scented oils which are selected to suit different types of ailments and for relaxation, energizing and stress.
Hot Stone Massage – this is done by using heated smooth stones that are placed on certain points on the body to warm and loosen tight muscles and balance energy levels in the body.
Shiatsu Massage – this is a type of Japanese bodywork that uses localised finger pressure in a rhythmic sequence on your acupuncture meridians. Each point is held for 2 – 8 seconds to improve the flow of energy and to help the body regain balance.
Thai Massage – this is similar to Shiatsu in that it aligns the energies of the body by using gentle pressure and stretches on specific points.
Reflexology Massage – this type of massage is done on the foot where pressure is put to certain points on the foot that correspond to organs and systems in your body.
Sports Massage –  is specifically designed for people who are involved in physical activity.

WHY GETTING A FOOT MASSAGE CAN HELP WITH ANXIETY…

Reflexology foot massage is available at The Hair & Beauty Lounge and not only is it a relaxing treatment it has been noted that it has other benefits as well.

By using aromatherapy oils with your massage can help fight anxiety (new studies have shown).

It is thought to boost levels of the calming hormone ‘oxytocin’, and the natural pain reliever serotonin.

Aromatherapist and Reflexologist Kirstin Luff says ‘If you are doing this yourself simple press and rub your foot with both hands, using a firm pressure for best results’.

Try Luff’s Relax Foot Cream, with Lavender, Ylang, Ylang and Vetivert Oils.
